First United Methodist Church
Drumright, Oklahoma
Methodism was established in Drumright, Oklahoma with the organization of a Sunday School on April 27, 1913.
By the Spring of 1914 a white frame church had been built on the same lot as the present building.
With population nearing 7,000 in 1924, a larger church was needed. Plans proceeded, building began, and the beautiful English Gothic edifice was dedicated on April 22, 1928.
The architect was F.A. Duggan of Tulsa. His previous works included St. Paul's Cathedral in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, theaters in St. Louis, Missouri, an Old English home near Terrace Drive in Tulsa, and Immanuel Baptist church of that city.
The exterior walls of this church are of especially chosen Arkansas boulders. The tower rises seventy-seven feet above ground level. the pinnacles are carved crockets and finials of Bedford stone. A gargoyle sits atop the northeast corner of the bell tower spire.
Few changes have been made in the interior other than those of the lower floor where three walls were removed removed to enlarge very small classrooms, ceiling lowered, carpeting and paneling added.
Church property was valued at $65,999 in 1931. It is now valued at over $1,000,000. Due to its age, beauty, sound structure, continual upkeep, by devoted ministers and church members.
First United Methodist Church was awarded the title of An Historical Place in the National Register of Historical Places on July 12, 1982.
Plans and programs have always been carried on to meet the needs of the community as well as those of our members.
Over thirty dedicated ministers have served our church and participated in community affairs. By April 1, 1990, 2,808 persons had been received into membership. Total membership on that date was 358, which included 236 residents and 122 non-residents. Today our membership totals approximately 178 with the bulk of our members residing in Drumright or the surrounding area.
